West Indies All Time XI

26 07 2010

As regular readers of Cricinfo will be aware, panels of experts from each country have been putting together an All Time XI for each test playing country. Over the past couple of weeks it has been the turn of the West Indies and nothing has illustrated their current woes more clearly than the sides selected. It is little surprise that none of the current crop made it into the team as, quite frankly, this is a team which  we would back to beat any other All Time Side from any other country. In full the team selected by the panels was as follows:

1. Gordon Greenidge
2. Conrad Hunte
3. George Headley
4. Viv Richards
5. Brian Lara
6. Garry Sobers
7. Jackie Hendriks
8. Malcolm Marshall
9. Michael Holding
10. Curtly Ambrose
11. Lance Gibbs

When you consider that this team could conceivably and realistically read as below – you see exactly how far the West Indies have fallen. The second eleven would still be too good for most other All Times Sides – even without such luminaries as Shiv Chanderpaul, Richie Richardson, Clive Lloyd, Colin Croft and Deryck Murray to name but a few.

1. Desmond Haynes
2. Roy Fredericks
3. Everton Weekes
4. Clyde Walcott
5. Frank Worrell
6. Learie Constantine
7. Jefferey Dujon
8. Joel Garner
9. Andy Roberts
10. Courtney Walsh
11. Wes Hall/Sonny Ramadhin (depending on conditions!)

There really are some great players on this list, unbelievable really, but you’re right there are some great names not even featured!

I didnt grow up watching the likes of Croft and Lloyd but I have seen footage of how great they were, Richie was an ok player in a great team, he was a good captain but I am not sure he is worthy of an all XI. Chanderpaul in my opinion should be considered, the problem is, he is the only consistent player in a failing team.

I hope that WI can pull it back together, find some real talent and show us the WI cricket we know and love. It used to painful watching WI sides demolish the English on a regular basis, but you cant deny it was fantastic cricket to watch.

Personally I think Richie was a great player and scored a lot of runs when the going got tough. Chandepaul has a good shout and I almost put him in the 2nd team but the records of the 3 W’s in the middle order plus Worrells captaincy really did it for me. Then there are also players like Rowe, Kallicharan and Kanhai. Excellent all of them.
I totally agree on watching the west indies, so good to watch. I think there is talent there but sadly the infrastructure and what it means to be West indian is no longer there anymore (according to Ian Bishop and tony cozier anyway!). Plus of course the lure of 20/20 cricket.
Come on Windies. Bring it back for us!

Really nice work of putting the all time West Indies All Time XI.

But it looks you missed a lot. But ya, XI players is little compared to Great Old West indies team.

Hey, could you add my site http://www.cricschedule.com – Cricket Schedule to your blogroll

I have added your blog at http://www.cricschedule.com/links.php

I’ll add you Hit Jain, no worries. The problem is selecting XI (or even 22) from all those great players. So many good ones and it makes me sad to look at the state of them now!

Could not forget the WI of 1970’s. A small group of nations but still powerful than whole world whether in bowling or batting.

Looking now, we cannot even compare one old great to the whole current team.
