McGeechan To Roar Again

31 01 2010

Brilliant news in the press today that Sir Ian McGeechan will be involved with the British & Irish Lions once more on their tour to Australia in 2013. Apparently Geechs will be performing a consultancy role over the next three years to ensure that the trip is planned in the optimum way. Any Lions side going down south has a very difficult trip ahead of them with the obvious problems of putting a scratch side together in a matter of weeks. In last years tour to South Africa various things conspired against the Lions, including the scheduling of the Heineken Cup final, lack of warm up games and understrength opposition. By getting Geechs on board we have every faith that many of these problems will be ironed out for the Australia trip.

Over the last 40 years no man has done more for to keep the Lions relevant, competitive and one of rugby’s great traditions. It is telling that the two tours previous to 2009 (Graham Henry’s bad tempered trip in 2001 and Woodward’s folly in 2005) were the least successful in every way and were the ones where Geechs wasn’t involved in a senior role. At least in 2013 with Geech’s advising on scheduling and general preparation, we can be reasonably confident that the Lions will have the best possible chance of success.
