A Noughty Eleven

13 01 2010

Having composed a best of the decade rugby side, here is our cricket offering*:

1. Virender Sehwag – 6248 (runs) @ 52.50
2. Matthew Hayden – 8364 @ 52.93
3. Ricky Ponting – 9458 @  58.38
4. Brian Lara – 6388 @ 54.06
5. Rahul Dravid – 8558 @ 50.63
6. Jacques Kallis – 8630 @ 58.70 and 205 wickets @ 32.00
7. Adam Gilchrist  – 5130 @ 46.64 (362 catches & 35 stumpings)
8. Andrew Flintoff – 3626 @ 32.08 and 220 wickets @ 32.38
9. Shane Warne – 357 wickets @ 25.17
10. Muttiah Muralitharan – 565 wickets @ 20.97
11. Glenn McGrath – 297 wickets @ 20.54

The big surprise here is Sachin Tendulkar missing out and this is a reflection on Dravid’s more consistent and higher run scoring in the decade. Dravid also scored more runs when it mattered most and his performances against the best side of the decade, Australia, reflect this.

Flintoff squeezes in during a decade in which world class opening bowlers were few and far between. Players such as Harmison, Gillespie, Zaheer Khan, Shane Bond and others all had their moments, but with Kallis as back up and Flintoff playing as a strike bowler his place can be justified. On a seaming pitch Murali may make way for Shaun Pollock but other than this possible change the Compulsive Hooker backs this side against any you can name!

*All stats mentioned are for the decade only.
